At the beginning, future Kevin says that the year is 1970 and a lot has changed. For example, Kevin has gotten over Winnie Cooper, and the two are now friends. Kevin thinks that that wouldn't happen to Paul and Carla, before Paul tells Kevin that Carla broke up with him. Kevin thinks that Paul should go out with another girl to make Carla jealous, but Paul has a problem with every girl Kevin suggests. When Kevin thinks they've run through everybody, Paul reveals that he likes Winnie, but doesn't want to ask her out because of Kevin's history of liking her. Kevin decides to ask Winnie to ask Paul out, telling her that he won't because of their friendship. After Winnie asks her out, Paul tells Kevin to let him know if he has a problem with it and he'll break things off.
Kevin is surprised when, after their first date, Paul tells Kevin that he and Winnie are going to continue going out (even after Carla gets jealous). Kevin tells Winnie that she shouldn't, thinking that she's letting Paul on, but Winnie asks who says she's doing that, admitting that Paul is cute. During gym, Kevin reminds Paul that he promised to break up with Winnie if Kevin had a problem, but Paul has changed his mind. When Mr. Cutlip has Kevin and Paul wrestle, they really fight at it. Later, Kevin realizes that he does still have feelings for Winnie, but didn't realize it until it was too late. He decides to congratulate Paul, who reveals that Winnie dumped him because she likes somebody else. Kevin asks who, but Paul says that he promised not to tell. However, Kevin can tell by the look on Paul's face that it is Kevin. He goes to Winnie's house, happy with the news, but when he reveals that Paul told him (though he really didn't), Winnie angrily slams the door.
