Gargamel kidnaps a Smurf in order to make his formula for turning metals into gold, and the Smurfs spend the night waiting for the opportunity to rescue the Smurf.
Tropes associated with this story include:
- Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Gargamel tries to do this with what he thinks is the giant-making formula near the end of the story, but because the Smurfs had switched the potions in the bottles, he ends up shrinking to no less than Smurf-size.
- Blowing a Raspberry: A Smurf teases Azrael into jumping towards him and out the window by doing this.
- Bolivian Army Ending: The story ends with Gargamael shrunken to Smurf size with Azrael about to eat him.
- The Tape Knew You Would Say That: In a variation of this idea, Gargamel left signs in the forest to direct a Smurf toward what they think is a sarsaparilla field, when in reality it is directing them into a trap. Along the way, a Smurf runs into a sign that says NOT THAT WAY! before he sees the arrow sign saying THAT WAY pointing to a hole underneath a bush.
- This Cannot Be!: Gargamel's reaction near the end when he drinks what he thinks is the giant-making formula, only to instead become small because the Smurfs had switched the potions in the bottles without him knowing about it.
