Chapter 5: History Lesson

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Culture Clash:
    • Hiccup is from frigid Scandinavia, so he has no idea what to do with a banana when given one.
    • Having lived in a Forever War with dragons, Hiccup is shocked to find that everything Ignacio's forge does is entirely mundane with no weapons involved, his first job being a mass delivery of spoons.
Hiccup: You don't make any swords? Or axes, or... anything?
Ignacia: Oh no no no, we don't do any of that. We don't need to! The Encanto is a paradise, safe from any intruders.
  • If Jesus, Then Aliens: When Hiccup realizes the mind-blowing fact that magic is real, he starts considering other "made-up" things might be real too.
Were witches abundant in the Encanto? How many other witches were there?
And what about other mythical creatures? Were Fairies real? Giants? Trolls? Was Gobber right about Trolls?
  • Internal Reveal: Hiccup learns about the creation of the Encanto and the Madrigal gifts from Mirabel...along with the fact that she's different from the rest of her family due to not receiving a gift.
  • Insistent Terminology: Mirabel clarifies to Hiccup that they aren't "witches."
Mirabel: Got that? Not witchcraft, magical gifts.
Hiccup: Alright, alright. I get it! No witches here.
  • Language Barrier: His first day on the job, Hiccup already hits a snag when he realizes that he can't read anything, as the Encanto uses a completely different alphabet than what he's used to and he needs Mirabel to translate.
