Recap / The Dick Van Dyke Show S 3 E 18 A Nice Friendly Game Of Cards

Go To

Sally walks into the Petrie's card game just in time to catch neighbor Mr. Gregory storming out, accusing Rob of using a marked deck to hustle the guests at poker.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Cassandra Truth: Rob originally plans to tell the Gregorys what happened when he discovers they've been playing with his marked magic cards. Jerry tells him that there's no way they'll believe the deck was swapped in accidentally, given that Rob began winning after Laura replaced the deck of cards.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Rob shows Ritchie how to perform the "pick a card" trick before sending him up to bed. When he comes back down, he nearly blows the situation by reading the markings on the cards.
  • Opinion Flip Flop: Initially, Laura wants to send Ritchie back to bed and Rob thinks he should get to stay and watch the card game a little while. When he begins reading the markings and commenting about everybody's cards, Rob immediately reverses himself and tries to send Ritchie back to bed.
  • Platonic Declaration of Love: After Ritchie begins commenting on the cards, Jerry hustles him and Rob into the kitchen for a talk. When Rob explains what must have happened, Jerry says it's unbelievable. Rob asks if Jerry believes him, and Jerry says the Gregorys don't love Rob like he does.
  • Running Gag: People keep interrupting their explanations to Sally to say hello to her.
  • Saying Too Much: Rob finds out when Ritchie comes downstairs that his magic deck got into the poker game and decides to let Mr. Gregory win because he'd never believe the real explanation. It goes awry when Laura keeps playing against Mr. Gregory. Desperate, Rob tells him he should call her bluff because he's got a better hand. Almost immediately, he realizes that was the wrong thing to say.
  • Sore Loser: Mr. Gregory storms out, not giving Rob a chance to explain or paying attention to Rob trying to give the pot back. According to his wife, this is a running problem. He habitually takes the wrong coats when he storms out so he has an excuse to come back and apologize.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Laura accidentally drops a card, puts a heel through it, and replaces the deck with Rob's magic deck, which was sitting on the counter. This spirals into the rest of the episode.
  • What Have We Ear?: Naturally, Rob pulls objects out of people's ears (and other things) while doing magic.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: Most of the episode consists of what happened before Sally walked in.
