Recap / The Bridge: Humanity's Stand Ch 9 Setting Up

Go To

Lauren Faust and Craig McCraken watch in awe as some Jaegers are prepped for transport. Captain Gondo joins them and admits he once feared humanity could not defend itself, but now the Jaegers give him hope. Marshall Pentecost joins them and reports their investigation of Hannibal Chou seems to be a dead end. All of his business transactions seem to be legit and he is planning to retire from the arms dealer business soon.

Craig reveals he has heard of Chou from reading articles about him. He and Lauren get into a small fight, with her scolding him for being interested in topics like arms dealing and Gondo and Pentecost looking on amused. After they get back on track, Gondo and Pentecost suspect that if Chou himself is not responsible for supplying Red Dawn with weapons, it may be corrupt members of his organization.

Pentecost asks Lauren and Craig to head a relief team in Somalia to help clean up after the Indominus Rex attack. Worried, Lauren points out how insanely hostile and xenophobic many Somalians are. Pentecost says they will hire Chou's organization to bodyguard them. That way, the couple will eventually be able to unmask the corrupt members. While Craig agrees with the plan, Lauren groans and asks when her life turned into a spy thriller.

After the GDF agrees to save Obsidius with a nuke, Zilla and Titanosaurus swim to another island to be out of the blast radius. Titanosaurus has to assure Obsidius that he'll see her again after a few days, sounding like a mother telling her son that she'll be home from work soon. Zilla awkwardly questions her about their relationship, and she admits Obsidius is like a child and instantly latched onto her for guidance once he was cut off from Xenilla.

Titanosaurus starts to get impatient because the bombers are taking too long. She says she's still angry about being mind-controlled and used as a puppet. Zilla says that technology was simply meant to extend a telepath's abilities and allow them to communicate longer distances. The disgruntled scientist modified it into a mind-control device without Pentecost's approval, and using it severely traumatized his daughter. After he was stopped, he was jailed and made an Un-person, with all his research and equipment destroyed. His daughter needed a lot of therapy.

Upon hearing this, Titanosaurus' anger starts to fade. Zilla admits that he admired her growing up, since she was one of the only aquatic dinosaurs around besides Godzilla Junior, and he learned how to fight and maneuver in water by watching her. She jokes that he still has a lot to learn, and if she had been the one fighting instead of her body being puppeted by an untrained teenage girl, he would have been the one to lose their fight. He tries to nickname her "Tanty", but she shoots that down.

She starts complaining about being bored again. Annoyed, he digs a hole in the ground and takes a nap in it, telling her to wake him when the bombers get here. A few minutes later, she notices something massive approaching the island, creating a tsunami. Amused, she braces herself and doesn't warn Zilla until the last second. When the wave hits, she is barely affected, while Zilla is left coughing and sputtering because even gills cannot let one breathe mud, angrily cursing her for not warning him to get out of the hole.

The new arrival is Gamera. Zilla complains about him swimming here and making a tsunami when he can fly. Gamera explains that he was exhausted from all the flying he had to do recently and wanted to conserve energy. Gamera asks how Titanosaurus befriended Obsidius. She explains that even though he's a lava monster created by Xenilla, he has the mind of a child and is very nice. The three of them decide to see what that massive creature under the water was. Before they dive, Gamera senses the presence of something small yet familiar. Titanosaurus says they will deal with it if they cross paths.

The submarine USS North Dakota and two other subs approach the area where the massive creature was detected. Captain Jack Clansi is informed by his Executive Officer Ron that Gamera, Zilla, and Titanosaurus have arrived. Sonar tech Jones is worried; there seems to be no marine life in this area whatsoever and the background noise is identical no matter the time of day, as if it were a recording played in a loop. He contacted the other two subs, the Kazan and the Ambush, and their instruments have reached similar results. Clansi sighs and says even if this is some kind of trap, they have to support their Kaiju teammates.

Clansi greets their newest crew mate who just arrived on the bridge, the telepath Carrie White, assigned to this mission to help coordinate everyone. She was just recruited by the GDF a few weeks ago, and she is very shy and clumsy. As she prepares to do her job, some of the crew think to themselves that telepaths may revolutionize submarine warfare, as a telepath can find other vessels and Kaiju a lot faster than sonar can.

Carrie makes telepathic contact with the three Kaiju and listens to their conversation. Gamera reveals he convinced King Kong to help fight against the Mutants, but Kong, although a bit concerned that his former student Godzilla Junior is missing, ordered that he never be bothered again once it is over. Zilla asks why Raiga isn't helping them, since she is also suited for deep sea missions. Gamera says after she defeated Agon, everyone lost track of her. Titanosaurus says that's good because that fight-happy lunatic would needlessly complicate things. Gamera tells Carrie they are ready to begin. He extends his mana sense outward and finds a barrier, and what he can sense is very strange. A bit worried, he decides their only option is to go for broke and charges at the barrier.
