The Beef has an upcoming health inspection.

Tropes:

  • Artistic License – Law Enforcement: The health inspector gives the Beef a "C" rating. In real-life, Chicago health inspections use a pass-fail system rather than a letter ranking.
  • Comically Missing the Point: In a darkly humorous moment, Carmy and Richie have this exchange upon learning the health inspector caught a box of cigarettes left by the stove.
    Carmy: Mother fucker.
Health Inspector: You can say that again!
    Richie: Mother fucke-.
Carmy: Don't actually say it again, you fucking idiot!
  • Failed a Spot Check: Someone left a box of cigarettes on the stove, just in time for the health inspector to see it.
  • Flashback: The episode begins with a snippet of Carmy working in a fine-dining restaurant in New York, and putting up with the abuse of his head chef.
  • Good Parents: While out getting caulk for repairs, Richie is called by his ex-wife about some issues with their daughter. Richie eventually starts talking with their daughter. Throughout the entire exchange, Richie is far quieter and sweeter than anytime we've seen him before, showing that he's on his best behavior for his family.
  • Oh, Crap!: The team assume that the cigarettes set next to the stove (one of several things that land them in hot water with the health inspector) were left there by Richie. At the end of the episode, when Carmy goes to have a smoke, he realizes that he was the one to leave them there, having setting them down while cleaning.
  • Truth in Television: The verbal and emotional abuse from Carmy's former head chef is a common problem in the restaurant industry.
