Recap / Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Episode 5 - "I Don't Get It, Not One Bit!"

Go To

Team Gurren (Kamina, Simon, Boota, Yoko and Leeron) find themselves in the underground village of Adai, where the inhabitants worship Gunmen as "Face Gods". Since the village can only support 50 people and no more, when triplets are born, exceeding the population by two, Father Magin the high priest decides to hold a lottery to decide who will be sent to the surface. Two orphans, Gimmy and his twin sister Darry, are chosen, to Kamina's outrage. After a battle with an enemy Gunmen in which Magin was forced to operate the village's "face god", Gimmy and Darry, along with a boy named Rossiu, leave Adai to join Team Gurren.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Broken Pedestal: Rossiu learns that Father Magin rigged the vote so that his mother was sent to the surface where she was most likely killed by Beastmen.
  • Cargo Cult: The people of Adai worship a discarded Beastman Gunmen as (in their words) a Face God.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Kamina feels that while the circumstances are different, Father Magin may as well be the same as the chief of Jiha.
  • Population Control: Adai has a lottery to send out people to the surface, aka the "Celestial Realm" when there's over 50 people. Father Magin rigs the vote so that Darry and Gimmy are voted to leave. Rossiu leaves partly in disgust as well as to see the world above.
