A sickly boy suffering from an unknown disease is discovered in the woods and immediately put under CDC quarantine. Because the boy can only speak Middle English and says he is from Roanoke, Ichabod deduces that the child is from the lost Roanoke Colony.

Investigating, Ichabod and Abbie discover a portal to a hidden village and the people within to be suffering from, but not dying from, the same illness, originating from the Horseman Pestilence. The boy was lured out into the present to spread his disease, but Ichabod and Abbie return him to his village, and the people both within and without the village are cured.

Tropes present in the episode:

  • Artistic License – Linguistics: The inhabitants of Roanoke Island, a colony that dates from the late 1580s, are depicted as using Middle English. This variant of the language had already been replaced by what's known as Early Modern English (aka Shakespearean English) about a century earlier.
  • Find the Cure!: Abbie is tasked with finding it after Ichabod gets sick after coming into contact with Thomas earlier on. It turns out it’s in Roanoke all along in the form of the colony’s spring water.
  • Lost Colony: The famously-vanished English colony of Roanoke features heavily in this episode.
