Recap / Seinfeld S 7 E 5 The Hot Tub

Go To

Elaine allows a houseguest to stay when he comes to run in the New York City marathon, and Jerry learns that he missed the marathon last year because he overslept and becomes obsessed with making sure he wakes up on time.

Meanwhile, after buying a hot tub from Lomez, Kramer begins using very frequently much to his excitement. However, one night, Kramer falls asleep while in the middle of soaking only for the hot tub's heat pump to suddenly break, and, in combination with having left his apartment windows open, Kramer awakens freezing half to death in 50 degree water, with his body's core temperature dropping by several points. Miserable and desperate for warmth, Kramer turns up the heat in Jerry's apartment as he waits for a new and industrial strength heat pump that he ordered as a replacement.

During all of this, George begins talking with some new business partners who constantly use terms like "son of a bitch" and "bastards", and picks up their talk.

Includes examples of

  • Artistic License – Sports: There's no way Jean Paul could have joined the marathon from a random point as he did. The marathon has strict rules and one of them is starting at the starting point on Staten Island. Not only would he not have been allowed to join, he'd be banned from any subsequent events sponsored by the New York Road Runners Club.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Thanks to George, Elaine's guest calls her neighbor's son a bastard and her landlord a son of a bitch.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Jerry's well-meaning efforts to keep Jean Paul from oversleeping and missing the marathon again. . . results in him oversleeping again, though Jerry's able to get him there on time.
  • Poor Communication Kills: A friend of Elaine told her in confidence that her son was born out of wedlock, which Elaine briefly tells Jerry and asks him to not tell anybody. George talks about how the big shots call everyone "bastard" and "son of a bitch", to which Elaine's guest, being from another country, thinks is how Americans normally talk. As a result, he innocently calls Elaine's neighbor's son a bastard and she thinks Elaine told him, and after being overheard by the landlord, whom he calls a son of a bitch, he gets kicked out of the apartment. Elaine's neighbor later angrily tells her that "your friend" knows and she thinks she means Jerry (the only friend she had told), and Elaine hadn't known about how George had been talking.
