• Book Ends: The story begins with the children playing on Old Rusty, though with some difficulty, due to the aged nature of the Jungle Gym. After its parts are used to build the "New Rusty", the children play on it with less difficult than before.
• Irony: What truly destroys Old Rusty is when it collapses under the weight of everyone who sided with TJ not to tear it down. In other words, it was ultimately destroyed by its own supporters.
• Like Father, Like Son: When Principal Prickly summons the children's parents to put an end to their rebellion, the parents are shocked to see Old Rusty and remember it as their own childhood Jungle Gym. In response, the parents side with the children.
