Japanese Title: The Greatest Pelipper Show in History!!

Original Airdate: January 30th, 2003

US Airdate: December 13th, 2003

While Ash and Co. continue their journey, they meet Anthony and his Pelipper, which is said to be the world's most powerful Pokémon. The reason is that his Pelipper knows Fire, Grass and Electric-type moves instead of only Water and Flying-type moves. How is Ash going to defeat Pelipper and how is it using attacks that it can't normally use?

Tropes

  • Blackmail: Team Rocket blackmails Anthony into lending them his Pelipper in exchange for not telling people about his cheating.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Meowth orders Pelipper to use Water Gun while he and all the Poké Balls are still inside of its beak. The just causes Pelipper to spray water at everyone, including Team Rocket.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Upon discovering Anthony's trick, James and Meowth are shown to be really disappointed and disgusted that he used such a dirty trick in order to make his Pelipper stronger. Jessie however sees it as a way to steal Pokemon from trainers and then Team Rocket decides to use Pelipper for their evil plans.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Anthony is a pompous, arrogant trainer who cheats in the fights in which he uses his Pelipper in order to built up his reputation as the trainer of the world's strongest Pokemon. However, he's shown to truly care about Pelipper and gets really upset when it is hurt or used for evil schemes. At the end of the episode and after being exposed and captured by Team Rocket, Anthony learns his lesson and vows to become stronger with his Pelipper without dirty tricks, thanking Ash and his friends for saving him and his beloved Pokemon.
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: Max is seemingly unaware that Pelipper is not restricted to flying and water moves, both in the anime and video games.
  • Pelican Package Pouch: Anthony cheats during his matches by stuffing Pokémon inside of his Pelipper's beak and having them use attacks that Pelipper can't normally learn.
  • Uncatty Resemblance: Anthony has a prominent chin and his mouth is drawn as curved like that of a beak, resembling the beak pouch of his signature Pokemon Pelipper.
