An Ultra Beast known as Kartana has arrived on Melemele Island, cutting everything in its path. Due to the sharp edges of its body, Ash and the Ultra Guardians have trouble trying to subdue it.
- Actor Allusion: In the Japanese version, Kartana's reversed cries are this to its seiyuu Daisuke Namikawa.
- Foreshadowing: The Meltan under Clefable's care start multiplying as of this episode.
- Shout-Out: This episode had aired in Japan not long after Lupin III creator Monkey Punch had passed away, so the nods to the series was basically a tribute to him.
- When you play some of Kartana's cries backwards, it's saying "Again, I have cut a worthless object.", Goemon's catchphrase. Similarly, in the English Dub, Kartana, in reverse, says "Once again, I cut a worthless object."
- Team Rocket's motto is drawn in the style of the more recent televised Lupin series.
