While making their way through the Lumiose Badlands, Ash and co. take a rest stop so Ash can train Goomy for battle, but the training is interrupted when a Spoink frantically makes its way to the group and begs for their help. It turns out that a nearby oasis has been taken over by a Grumpig, who is bullying and manipulating all the local Spoink into being its servants, and things are further complicated when they learn that Grumpig itself was actually manipulated into its actions by Team Rocket. Ash and co. confront Team Rocket but end up caged while Pikachu is captured. Goomy gets free and tries to battle Spoink while Ash works to break down the cage doors with the help of Frogadier. When Ash finally succeeds, he intercepts an attack from Spoink and Goomy is incredibly moved by its trainer's selflessness, and evolves into Sliggoo right on the spot. With its new level of strength and new move Dragon Breath, Sliggoo easily beats Grumpig and dispatches Team Rocket, freeing all the Spoink.
