A pair of brothers brings Ash and his friends to the Battle Chateau. There they learn about its history and its battling rules and ranking system and Ash even participates. They also reunite with Viola the Santalune Gym Leader, who is a high-ranking member at the chateau, and meet Grant, a wall-climbing enthusiast who is also a high-ranking member. Grant only needs one more victory to achieve the rank of Grand Duke, the highest rank there is, so he challenges Viola. The consists of Viola and her Surskit vs. Grant and his Onix. Grant quickly gains the upper hand thanks largely to his excellent use of the move Rock Tomb and soon emerges victorious. At the day's end, Ash learns that Grant is none other than the Cyllage Gym Leader, so he decides that in order to win, he must immediately begin thinking of strategies to counter Onix's Rock Tomb.
