The team investigates when the wife of a judge (Alan Rosenberg) is killed but the motivation is not what they would think.

First appearance of Megan Reeves (Diane Farr) and Colby Granger (Dylan Bruno).

Tropes for the episode:

  • Call-Back: At the end of the episode, Don references Larry's earlier comments about "quantum entanglement".
  • Disproportionate Retribution: A cop's widow had a judge's wife killed because the judge sentenced her husband's killer to life rather than death. Doubles as Misplaced Retribution, as the woman seems to have displaced much of her anger for the killer onto the judge, even seeming to attribute the damage that her husband's death caused to her family to the sentence rather than to the actual murder.
  • Hollywood Law: In-universe, the perpetrator seems to believe that her family's ordeal — specifically, the multiple appeals and request for a new trial filed by her husband's killer — is entirely attributable to the fact that said killer was given a life sentence rather than the death penalty, seemingly thinking that if the death sentence had been given, he'd be dead and no longer around to bother her. In reality, the death penalty process usually takes decades and also involves numerous appeals, so it's likely that she would have endured a similar process regardless of the sentence. Potentially justified as it's suggested she's just looking for someone to blame for her family's troubles and this particular aspect provided a convenient target.
  • New Meat: Colby gets himself and David into trouble by coming in too hard against a motorcycle gang.
  • Put on a Bus: Although she missed the last two episodes of Season 1, it's this episode that establishes that Terry Lake (Sabrina Lloyd) is gone long-term, as Don's friend mentions her transferring to Washington.
