Turns out O'Connell had previously been spotted by Goony multiple times in the past due to his insistence on using salami as bait, the smell of which causes Goony to spontaneously split into a school of fish with the one and only collective prerogative to keep humans safe. This is a contrast to Goony himself, whose pure form is similar to the Loch Ness Monster, with the instincts to match.
