Recap / Murder She Wrote S 5 E 1 JB As In Jailbird

Go To

Jessica's exploits have sent many people to prison, but after yet another run-in with M16 agent Michael Haggarty, Jessica finds herself incarcerated for an identity theft and a murder she didn't commit. However, more sinister schemes lurk behind the scenes. Haggarty is hot on the trail of a mysterious enemy agent called the Cobra, and if he and Jessica can't find him in time, a planned assassination could lead to international consequences.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Book Ends: According to Jessica, Haggarty picked her up at the airport. However, his escorting her went awry when spy business became involved. At the end, he offers to take her back to the airport, but mentions they have to make a quick stop in Chinatown to pick up some stuff from agents. Jessica declines.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Jessica reads a Zane Grey paperback during her incarceration, one she picked up from the murder victim. It turns out to have the murdered agent's payoff, a rare stamp, in it.
  • Gilligan Cut: Jessica tells Michael firmly that she's spent enough time behind bars and insists he talk to the police captain and get her out. Then the scene cuts to Jessica back in her cell, reading.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: Grady unwillingly picks up the phone while reporter Miss Morrison is listening in, to discover that it's Donna. Miss Morrison, thinking it's Jessica and eager to get the story, keeps trying to cut in, and Grady, naturally, doesn't explain to Donna what's really going on, leading her to jump to understandable conclusions.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: Lancaster believes that being sent to the California bureau is punishment for an assassination that happened on his watch.
