- Cowardice Callout: Elliot condemns the followers of organized religion during his scathing rant as nothing more than another kind of drug addict, "afraid" to face the reality of a universe where there's no higher purpose. The fact that one of the people of Elliot's church group whom he's expressing the rant to claimed to have seen proof that he was "forgiven" after committing a racially-charged assault retroactively proves Elliot's point.
- Did I Just Say That Out Loud?: Elliot hopes for a second that the rest of his clueless church group didn't hear the Straw Atheist rant he just went on.
- Foreshadowing: The gruesome history of Fun Society, which is marked by the unusual deaths of its owners. In the season two finale, we learn that Romero's death was caused by a neighbor's stray bullet.
- Mushroom Samba: Elliot overdoses on Adderall in a desperate attempt to destroy Mr. Robot, but this comes with disturbingly vivid hallucinations such as being kidnapped by men in black and force-fed concrete, Leon talking backward, and seeing three girls with fsociety masks in his mother's house.
