- Connected All Along: The opening scene, as a prelude to the fireworks to come, shows Angela and Darlene in ballet class casually discussing their concerns about Elliot. Up until now, there had been no hints that they even knew each other, let alone had anything in common.
- Creature of Habit: Whiterose is obsessed with time and operates in accordance with it to ensure perfection.Whiterose: You hack people. I hack time.
- The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You: Upon learning who Darlene and Mr. Robot really are, Elliot becomes so enraged and manic that he actually attacks the camera, accusing us of knowing the truth all along.
- Mind Screw: The first of many that utterly destroys the status quo of the series up to this point: Elliot has been experiencing psychogenic amnesia throughout season one, and as a result, learns that not only Darlene is his sister, but Mr. Robot is his father. His "dead" father.
- Rage Against the Reflection: In the midst of a psychotic breakdown following the truth about Darlene and Mr. Robot, Elliot punches out his bathroom mirror.
- Surprise Incest: Downplayed. Elliot finds out that Darlene is his sister moments after he kisses her on the lips and she freaks out at him.
- Unreliable Narrator: While he did have his ambivalent moments before, Elliot's trustworthiness is irreparably damaged following this episode.
