Recap / Marvels Spider Man S 1 E 25 The Hobgoblin Part 2

Go To

Hobgoblin and Spider-Man now work as a team to stop the remaining Sinister Five. But during a fight with Doc Ock, Hobgoblin suddenly turns against Peter, claiming that Spider-man is a fraud and he himself New York's true hero.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Contrived Coincidence: Harry just so happens to wake up from a fainting spell and stumble into Spider-Man's and the other Hobgoblin's latest battle, just in time for Peter to unmask the impostor and reveal to Harry that the other Hobgoblin is Norman.
  • Gaslighting: Norman uses Harry's fainting spells to pose as the Hobgoblin and verbally as well as physically attack Spider-Man, while simultaneously trying to convince Harry that the attacks are actually his doing and that he's developed some sort of split-personality due to a mixture of experimenting on himself when searching for Norman's cure and a subconscious desire to surpass Spider-man.
  • Obfuscating Disability: Norman is still in a wheelchair, but during the climax of the episode it's revealed he doesn't actually need it anymore.
  • Riddle for the Ages: What exactly caused Harry's fainting spells and blackouts throughout the episode is never explained.
  • Split Personality: Subverted. Thanks to Norman's manipulations, Harry starts to believe he's developed one and that it is the Hobgoblin attacking and slandering Spider-Man. In reality, the antagonistic Hobgoblin is Norman and Harry was knocked out during the attacks.
