Tropes associated with this episode:

  • Big Fun: Deconstructed. John Bevins is as warm and kind as he's wide, but his obesity is also a source of shame for his daughter, who keeps distancing herself from him and makes John very insecure.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After spending much of the episode feeling ashamed of her father, when Amelia sees that John has essentially given up his will to live, she tearfully admits to having hurt him, but also proclaims that she loves her father and pleads for him to live; this literally brings John back to life as he comforts his daughter.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Amelia's reaction when she finds out that her cruel words about her father led him to refuse to let the doctor operate him when he's seriously injured from an accident in the blind school. Also Laura when she finds out the man whose obesity she'd made remarks about and laughed at was her new friend's father.
  • N-Word Privileges: As they discuss their plans for marriage, Adam casually jokes on how he can kiss Mary in the school whenever he wants to and none of the blind kids would notice. That'd be incredibly insensitive and ableist if Adam weren't blind himself.
  • Weight Woe: John Bevins, whose obesity makes him the butt of jokes and his own daughter refuses to let her friends know he's her father. It's implied that he has a natural tendency to gain weight even when he doesn't eat too much.
  • You Are Fat: Smitty, an acquantaince of John Bevin's, always approaches him on the way to the work with fat jokes. He pretends to take them in stride, but by the end, when he finally makes amends with his daughter, he calmly but firmly tells Smitty off as he's too busy walking Amelia to school.
  • You Are Not My Father: When Laura attempts to apologize to Amelia for laughing at her father the day before, the girl flat-out denies that John is her father.
