Big Brownie is a 1960 episode in the Trans-Lux Felix the Cat series for television, as directed & Produced by Joe Oriolo. It is the first of the three with Rancher Bart and Big Brownie, together with "Felix and Poindexter Out West" and "Out West with Big Brownie".

One day, at the Professor's lab with Felix and Poindexter, Felix's just got a letter from racnher Mr.Bart, meaning Felix can no longer babysit, so he has to get to bed early and get ready. However, that night, as the cat gets ready, guess who sneaks into the suitcase, Poindexter, despite real life hazards of this. Soon, at the ranch, Felix is with Bart, who tells "tale tells" to Felix of big grizzly bear, "Big Brownie", who's been storming the ranch, raging thru tree. "Ya see them trees thar, Felix? Brownie doesn't EAT them...he uses them for Toothpicks, ha ha!". After this hardy joke, they're at the ranch, where Poindexter reveals himself to have bene in there to both. W Qith no hard feelings, Bart welcomes both, especially considering Poindexter is ready for Big Brownie.

Now with the snow, Poinsy and Felix head off, but Big Brownie then grabs Poindexter as Felix then falls into a hole. Big Brownie has been looking at Poindexter, who himself almost falls into the same place but is gets saved by the bear, who playfully bounces the kid. Shedding some tears and weeping, Poindexter asks hte big bear to help him catch Felix. The bear complies, but when he grabs the cat, Felix freaks, but Poinsy explains that this is Big Brownie.,

Meanwhile, Mr.Bart hasn't yet realized what all's happened but sees Big Brownie and fires and scares them..He eventually captures them all, as Poindexter then touches a button on his vest, as he did in a few previous episodes, and sends out a highly powerful melting ray, which melts the muzzle of the rancher's gun. The bear then runs off."Where did Big Brownie go, Poinsy?" They then laugh..Poindexter shows where Bronwie went: off to his favorite spot, where all the trees went. Another shared laugh between them. And where is Bart now? Sitting on a log, moping on the snowy ground. Felix and Ppoindexter again laugh. Bart, for the first time, has his trademark tantrum, running into the log cabin where he gets a device a la the Professor's in the early shorts, to kick his ass. (The 1958 Herman and Katnip classic "Felineous Assault" used this..must have been a Famous/Flesicher favorite.)

Felix then laughs.

Tropes:

  • Anti-Villian: Rancher Mr.Black Bart, who makes his debut here, is a nice guy who happens to want to avenge Big Brownie, who also makes his debut here as well, but comes up as odds to the others.
  • Bears Are Bad News: Big Brownie is not exactly welcome at the ranch due to past events.
  • Villian Has A Point: Since bears are "Extremely" dangerous, as extreme as he sounds, Bart does hjave a reason for wanting Big Brownie out of his hair-after all, the bear "did" go out on a rampage earlier (and as seen in a few more shorts.)
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Bart, who just wants to keep the bear out of his ranch.
