Recap / Hell Girl S 1 E 9 Sweet Trap

Go To

The day after Hajime witnesses the disappearance of Goro Ishizu, He returns to the display case Gorō got dragged into, hoping to find a clue to what happened. Later, he shows up at the house of Chie Tanuma, the person who banished Gorō to Hell, to ask for an interview but is turned away. Hajime gets a call from his editor asking for some photographs and he leaves. Meanwhile, Yuka Kasuga is showing a famous baker, Shinya Morisaki, several desserts her sister Hiromi made. Morisaki says that he is going to miss having Hiromi working for him. Yuka returns to her sister's bakery to find Hiromi looking over the floor plan for the kitchen. Hiromi thanks Yuka for helping to save money for the bakery, but Yuka says they're in it together. Hiromi is unnerved when Yuka tells her that she showed Morisaki some of the bakery's desserts.

Later that week, Hajime is checking the photographs his editor called for while Tsugumi is watching Morisaki present several desserts. Hiromi and Yuka are preparing their desserts and are horrified that Morisaki is presenting their desserts as his own. Hiromi tries to apologize to the film crew, but Yuka tells her not to as it isn't her fault. Later, Yuka is at her job register when two girls are discussing the Hell Correspondence and returns to the bakery to find that business has been slow. Yuka says that she wants to try to get Morisaki to confess, but Hiromi tells her not to and says that Yuka will only make things worse. Yuka accesses the Hell Correspondence and submits Morisaki's name. Ai is working on an origami crane when she receives Yuka's request. Yuka receives a text message saying her request was received and Ai opens the sliding door in her room. Yuka follows Ai through the door and into the sunset realm where Ai's minions appear. Hone Onna comments that Yuka and Hiromi were set up and Yuka tells the minions that her family dreamed of setting up their own bakery. Ai gives Yuka Wanyuudo's straw doll and punctuates her warning about the deal with a vision of Yuka falling into a pool of blood and being attacked by hands. Yuka awakens in her room with the straw doll.

The next day, a bank agent tells Hiromi that they're foreclosing on the shop. Meanwhile, Morisaki thanks the bank's manager for agreeing to foreclose. Everything in the bakery is removed and Yuka apologizes for showing Hiromi's deserts to Morisaki. Hiromi tells Yuka why Morisaki did everything he did. Morisaki is preparing for a party where the desserts will be available to the guests when Yuka confronts him saying she knows about how Hiromi rejected his sexual advances and that he put her out of business because of it. Morisaki responds that he never thought things would go so well and suggests that Yuka and Hiromi take up work at other bakeries to pay off their debts. A livid Yuka unties the straw doll's thread and Ai rides forth to claim Morisaki's soul.

At the party, the guests are presented with the desserts, but one says that the cake is inedible. The other guests also express disgust at their desserts and begin throwing them at Morisaki. Tsugumi gets a vision of the place where the party is being held and directs Hajime there. Morisaki confesses that the desserts weren't really his creations and Ai's minions show up as reporters and interrogate him about his motivation for stealing Hiromi's desserts. Morisaki runs out into the hall and meets Hiromi, who says she has feelings for him too and asks him to eat her. "Hiromi" explodes into cake batter. Morisaki runs outside and gets into a taxi with Wanyuudo in the driver's seat. Wanyuudo asks Morisaki if he likes sweet things before he also explodes into cake batter, which fills the cab. Morisaki awakens in a place full of cakes to find himself stuck inside a gingerbread house on one of the cakes. Ai's minions tell Morisaki to repent, but he says Hiromi was in the wrong because he gave her special treatment and she rejected him. Ai appears in a flurry of cherry blossoms and banishes Morisaki to Hell. On the boat to Hell, Hone Onna, who is disguised as Hiromi, sticks her skeletonized hand in Morisaki's mouth as Ai ferries him through Hell's gate.

Hajime arrives at the party only to find that Morisaki is nowhere to be found. The next day, Hiromi is working at a shop and Yuka delivers her lunch before running back to her own job, Hell's seal visible on her chest. A candle with Yuka's name is lit.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Lethal Chef: Invoked. Part of the Hell banishment was the party guests saying that the deserts Morisaki stole were inedible.
  • Level Ate: The second part of the banishment has Ai's minions standing on floating cakes floating in the middle of nowhere. Morisaki is imprisoned in a gingerbread decoration shaped like a house on another cake.
  • Media Scrum: Ai's minions form one during the Hell Banishment.
  • Mind Rape: Morisaki gets one befitting his misdeeds before being banished to Hell: he is given an opportunity to serve the recipe-stolen sweets to party guests, but the guests claim the food tastes horrible and throw the food at him, ironically causing him to take blame for sweets he didn't make, rather than credit for the same. He is then harassed by a cake-batter version of Hiromi, mirroring his intentions towards Hiromi, and he is trapped in a cake-batter taxi and then stuck as a gingerbread ornament on one of the cakes, as he previously saw Yuka and Hiromi as ornaments to his own success.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: This episode's Hell banishment has the minions give two in different forms.
  • Supreme Chef: Hiromi is one. Morisaki also counts, considering that he was originally Hiromi's mentor. If only he hadn't tried to pay her back for turning him down...
