Recap / Hayate The Combat Butler Volume 16

Go To

Yet another volume of short, disconnected arcs with adaptations scattered around the later anime seasons. Hayate and Hinagiku go out on a what-do-you-mean-of-course-it's-not-a-date in a crappy movie theater and an amusement park. Sakuya gets possessed by the Father. Finally, Hayate goes to return Izumi's cell phone (which Shiranui stole back in volume 12) and gets roped into a battle with Kotetsu over lava.

Chapters included:

  • "Bad Luck Still Brings Bad Luck"
  • "Magical Labyrinth"
  • "The Wandering Path of the Otaku"
  • "I Can Straighten You Out"
  • "Enough Is Enough for an Unforgettable Memory"
  • "When You're Tired, Just Sleep and Try Again"
  • "Even if You Saw It, It's Very Important to Pretend You Didn't"
  • "'Asano-san, What You Said Earlier Was Meant in a Positive Way, Right?' 'Of Course! I'm Just Fooling Around, KAMI☆STA!'"
  • "When You Beat the Bushes, Snakes Appear, Corpses Appear, Nothing Good Happens"
  • "No Definite Plans"
  • "For Now, Try Discussing It with Body Language"

Tropes:

  • Lava Adds Awesome: Hayate's duel with Kotetsu is set over lava, for no particular reason besides being (figuratively) cool.
  • Movie-Theater Episode: Hayate takes Hinagiku to a movie theater at the request of the Idiot Trio, who are suspicious of her sudden positive attitude.
  • Plot-Based Voice Cancellation: Hinagiku's sorta-confession at the end of the movie arc is masked by a convenient passing train.
