The Drifter was never well liked by the Vanguard, but your Guardian is contacted by others looking to know more about what the Drifter is trying to accomplish. As this is going on, Drifter looks to upgrade Gambit into a more intense Gambit Prime but also introduces Guardians into a new place altogether with The Reckoning, a battle against Taken taking place on a chunk of ice connected to the elusive Nine.

Jokers Wild contains examples of:

  • Aborted Arc: One of the main plotlines of the season involves the choice of either betraying Drifter and investigating his illicit activities, or working with him to make things more lucrative for both yourself and him. Aside from only changing the objectives slightly, this plot goes nowhere after the final step, and has been forgotten about since then.
  • Alien Geometries: The Reckoning takes place in Unknown Space, a place controlled by the Nine. The look of the place is very sparse but with odd looking geometric structures blending in with the snowy locale.
  • Foreshadowing: One of the conversations between Drifter and the Emissary reveals that he's had visions of the Black Fleet coming to Sol, complete with a momentary representation of some of their ships. Prior to Shadowkeep, this is the first time we ever get a good idea of what the ships look like, and a big indicator as to what's coming, which Season of Arrivals focuses on.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Drifter's allegiances are definitely questionable, he is barely tolerated being in the Tower by the Vanguard and the entire story surrounds trying to make sure he isn't going to betray everyone.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: Drifter comments in audio files how much he despises lightbearer immortality. During the Dark Age, he once died of starvation only to be brought back to life still hungry.
