Tropes in this episode

  • Cannot Tell a Lie: Rossi asks Garcia to tell the team he's on vacation instead of at the funeral. She does not fool anyone. Probably doesn't help that the team already knows Rossi doesn't like taking vacation time.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In the end, Frank kills himself so Estelle can get his liver.
  • No Kill like Overkill: Inverted. Callahan and Reid find that for once the UnSub's M.O. can be termed "underkill".
  • Papa Wolf: The UnSubs kills organ donors to get a liver for his daughter. He eventually escalates to killing another patient on the waitlist.
  • Selective Obliviousness: The team notes that the killer's daughter will likely not register that she has her father's liver, even if she understands what he did and why he did it.
Hotch: "As we all know, there are some truths the brain refuses to process."
  • You Are Not Alone: Rossi's daughter Joy flies out to LA to be with him for the funeral.

Rossi: "As life runs on, the road grows strange with faces new. And near the end, the milestones into headstones change, 'neath every one a friend." James Russell Lowell.
