Go To

What at first seemed to be an ordinary break-and-enter assignment for Hayley turns serious when her partner on the job turns up dead and she's being framed for a massive cyberattack that crippled London's power grid.

Tropes that appear in this episode:

  • Code Emergency: Code 44 means Hayley needs to abandon the mission.

  • A Day in the Limelight: Hayley's backstory and character are explored in this episode.

  • Distracted by the Sexy: Beth's job was to seduce Ned and get him to open a connection to the secure server so that Hayley could unwittingly upload a worm into the system and crash the power grid over in London.

  • Evil Former Friend: The one actually responsible for the cyberattack used to be Hayley's former partner at MI-6.

  • Faking the Dead: The Iranians successfully fooled British intelligence into believing that Wesley was dead.
  • Family of Choice: The episode establishes that Hayley had no family and no real friends for most of her life. It establishes that she views Alexis (her new best friend) and Castle himself as her surrogate family. A bit strange, since they know each other for less than a year and Alexis is much younger than Hayley.
  • Frame-Up: Hayley's old partner Wesley framed her for the cyberattack, knowing that she would eventually discover his involvement and would then agree to go rogue with him together.

  • Ripped from the Headlines: The worm Hayley helped design was supposedly Stuxnet, which in real life was used to sabotage the Iranian nuclear program.

  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: During one of her jobs, Hayley is asked to break into an energy company's office and upload spyware to the VP's computer to prove his infidelity. In reality, she inadvertently uploaded worm that she once helped design into the company's secure servers to cause citywide blackout in London. This ends up branding her as a fugitive as she becomes the prime suspect in both the cyberattack and the death of her partner on the job.

  • Secret Test of Character: Wesley claims to have given one to Hayley.

  • Swirlie: Hayley’s enhanced interrogation technique.
