Recap / Captain Marvel 7

Go To

Dante Cruz narrates that he and the other Alpha Flight cadets (A'di and Glory) thought Carol "Captain Marvel" Danvers was killed when she was hit by a Chitauri warship, and he was stunned because he never thought a simple Chitauri could beat Earth's strongest hero. Then again, he notes, he would never have thought that Steve "Captain America" Rogers would have joined HYDRA or that he and other fresh cadets would have been fighting on the front lines against the Chitauri. He's interrupted by an automated gun from the turret shooting at them, having seemingly misidentified them as Chitauri. The three are forced to run along the satellite's surface. Meanwhile, the droid Itz transmits a message from Wendy Kawasaki on Earth asking for anyone to respond, but Danvers (who is closest to the droid) is unconscious and doesn't do so.

Glory is hit in a leg by the turret and Cruz almost falls off the edge of the satellite before barely managing to grab onto a ledge. Meanwhile, Kawasaki says that she just needs to know if Danvers is okay. Danvers wakes up and recognizes Kawasaki's voice, but then a single Chitauri warrior lands on the satellite and rushes at the dangling Cruz. Glory tries to save him but runs out of power in her mechanical legs, so Itz charges the Chitauri warrior and self-destructs in its face. Cruz's grip slips and he worries about falling off into space but is then saved by Danvers, who grabs all three cadets and takes them back to the satellite.

Once they're back inside, Danvers rants at the cadets about breaking protocols and asks what they were doing. Cruz explains that they were trying to use Itz to send a signal to Earth, and A'di sobs that Itz was a terrible drone but a great friend. She's upset that their plan didn't even work, but Danvers says that isn't true and they may have made contact with Earth after all.

Later, Danvers is working on the bridge while the cadets and her lieutenant Abigail Brand watch. Brand protests that Danvers has been working for an hour and could use a break, but Danvers refuses to stop. The cadets say they're sure they got through to Earth but don't think they can do it again now that Itz is destroyed. Danvers compliments the cadets on their initiative and says they do at least have proof the shield can be penetrated, if only by electromagnetic signals. She orders Glory to get Hopper up to speed and to work with him on designing a method for bringing the shield down, and also to try to fix Itz. She orders everyone else to Hanger 7.

As they leave, Brand asks Danvers if she's really comfortable sending two cadets to use the expensive, experimental equipment in Hanger 7, and Danvers says yes. She then orders Eugene "Puck" Judd and Walter "Sasquatch" Langkowski to get their squadrons ready and to go to Hanger 7 as well. Brand says that those squadrons aren't battle-tested, even if they work they can't take the shield down, and even if they could knock down the shield that would just expose Earth to the Chitauri. Danvers cuts her off and tells her to get the ships flight-ready, and then to meet her behind the moon. She asks for Brand's trust, and Brand eventually says she does trust her. Danvers walks off and again orders Brand to get the squadrons ready.

Danvers goes to the infirmary and talks to Marcus "Hyperion" Milton, who is keeping watch over the comatose Avril "Quasar" Kincaid. Danvers muses on how Kincaid took a blow that would have otherwise hit Milton and how she knows they both feel responsible for her injury. Danvers also notes that she helped build the shield and kept the Chitauri invasion a secret until it was too late, thus playing into Rogers' plan. Aloud, though, she tells Milton that her cadets were able to contact Earth and he might be able to help. She then asks him if he's ever gone fishing.

Two ships of the Alpha Flight fleet fly behind the moon. Brand, who is on one of the ships with Langkowski, A'di, and others, and who is speaking to the other ship (containing Cruz, Judd, and others) with a hologram, warns everyone that the equipment they're using is completely untested so they need to be careful. She dispatches the ships to different quadrants and then orders everyone to battle stations. As the ships move, Cruz asks Judd how a simple flanking maneuver with two ships will beat back the Chitauri fleet, and Judd reveals that the two ships are deploying countless drones to help them.

Back on the main Alpha Flight satellite, Glory repairs her damaged robotic leg as Hopper works on Itz. He notes that he's salvaged the Central Processing Unit and one arm, and says he'd hate to see the drone be scrapped since it's really 'cool' technology. Glory asks to see schematics for the planetary shield and Hopper shows them to her. She says she sees something odd in the pattern of frequencies, and then Hopper sees it too. He's stunned by what he sees and calls Glory a genius.

The next wave of the Chitauri invasion arrives. Danvers and Milton grab one of the large Chitauri warships and drag it to Earth, where they throw it into the shield and destroy it. All the other Chitauri follow and the fleet's drones then form a large cylindrical net around the enemy, which have been lured into position chasing the warship Danvers and Milton had dragged. This funnels the enemy fleet into a neat, compact column and makes them easy to target. The Chitauri begin to retreat but then the Guardians of the Galaxy (Peter "Star-Lord" Quill, Rocket Racoon, and Groot) arrive in their ship and cut off the Chitaur's retreat. They work with Alpha Flight and destroy the Chitauri forces.

Later, the cadets celebrate on the bridge along with the Guardians, Danvers, Milton, and Danvers' command staff. Hopper and Glory then tells Danvers they think they can get through the shield by using an oscillator they salvaged from Itz. By combining it with the satellite's laser canon, they can vary the frequency of the laser in just the right way to breach the shield. They implement the plan and fire the laser, which quickly begins to break through the shield, but the effort drains so much energy that the generators give out. Judd reports that they're down to life-support only and have no power for anything else, and Hopper adds that the shield is still up. At that moment, Groot and Rocket Raccoon note that a new wave of the Chitauri fleet has just arrived. Judd asks how that can even be possible when they destroyed all the remaining Chitauri forces, but Danvers just says there must have been more Chitauri than they thought, and now there's nobody else to help them fight off the threat.

  • Hope Spot: The Chitauri have been destroyed and the satellite crew has found a way through the shield... but their generator dies before they can break through the shield, and more Chitauri show up moments later.
