Tropes

  • Adults Are Useless: They're certainly useless in stopping Moe from bullying Calvin initially, and Calvin believes that Hobbes will be more useful in putting an end to it than the adults. At the end of the arc, Calvin's mom says that she contacted the school to clamp down on Moe's bullying, but if the comic is meant to be taken as a chronologically-ordered series of events, they do a very poor job of it going forward.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Moe is scared off from further bullying of Calvin, Calvin genuinely believes that it's because Hobbes intimidated him, and is ecstatic at the end of the arc. However, Moe backed off because Calvin's behavior made it seem like a trick to get him in trouble, he suffers no actual consequences for his prior bullying, and future strips would show that he continues to bully Calvin.
  • Malicious Misnaming: Moe calls Hobbes a 'teddy bear', which Hobbes certainly takes as an insult. It's possible that Moe is so stupid he actually thinks Hobbes is a bear.
