Calvin digs up a worm and tries to gross Susie out by offering to eat it. Susie is unfazed and plays right back at Calvin, insisting that he to eat even more worms, quickly escalating the challenge.

- Big Damn Heroes: Calvin is just about to eat the five worms for Susie, when Calvin's mom shows up and drags him home. As soon as they're out of Susie's sight, Calvin immediately expresses relief that she showed up when she did, as Susie had been in such control of the challenge terms that he was only going to get a nickel for the five worms.
- Comically Small Bribe: When Susie says that she's only willing to pay a nickel for Calvin eating the five worms, he questions if he might need to go to the hospital over this. Exasperated, Susie says she'll throw in another nickel if he goes to the hospital. Calvin insists she prove she has two nickels.
- Did Not Think This Through: Calvin wants to gross out Susie by betting her a nickel that he'll eat a live worm. He wanted her to get disgusted and run away but didn't count on Susie not being grossed out and actually being prepared to make Calvin eat the worm as proof, given that her money is on the line (and actually forcing him to up the number to five worms to make it worth a nickel to her).
- No-Sell: Calvin wants to gross Susie out by offering to eat a worm. Susie is completely unaffected, escalating the challenge to five worms, and then negotiates him down from fifty cents to five cents to eat them. Calvin takes the bait and quickly ends up in a situation that he really doesn't want to be in.
- Third Party Dealbreaker: Calvin's mom happens upon him about to eat worms for Susie's nickel. She drags him home, telling Susie that it's mean to take advantage of kids who lack sense. Calvin complains loudly... and then thanks her once they're away from Susie, since he was originally just trying to gross Susie out and got outsmarted.
