Recap / Barney & Friends S1 E2 "My Family's Just Right for Me"

Go To

Family Night is approaching and Barney's friends are excited to show their purple pal what they're planning. However, Kathy feels left out, as she feels her family is too small to be important. Barney and his friends talk about the differences in their families, family traditions, and how even pets can be family as well. Barney reassures Kathy that it's love, not size, that makes a family special.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Ambiguously Absent Parent: As mentioned below, Kathy has no father but he is not brought up at all so the reason for his absence is unknown. However, in the 1993 Family Marathon, Barney does mention that “[Kathy’s] daddy doesn’t live with her”, implying that her parents could be divorced.
  • Disappeared Dad: Kathy's father.
  • Metaphorically True: Barney decides to paint a "family portrait" of his friends. When he finishes the picture, the kids are startled to find that instead of a picture of themselves, Barney painted the word "love." Barney then explains that being a family means love.
  • Multi Generational Household: Kathy lives with her mother and grandmother.
  • Ode to Family: The episode's title song is about how all families are different but are still loving families.
  • Overly Narrow Superlative: When the kids are showing paintings of their families to Barney, Luci compliments her younger sister Tina on her painting, which leads to this exchange:
Luci: Oh, Tina, you made me look lovely!
Tina: Of course! You're my favorite sister!
Luci: You mean I'm your only sister.
Tina: Well, you're still my favorite!
  • Raised by Grandparents: The 3rd verse of the song "My Family's Just Right For Me" is about a boy who is raised by his grandmother.
