Recap / Arknights Babel

Go To

Beyond the sky, beyond the twin moons, that's where we lived, and where we rested. You Sarkaz seek to expel your enemies through the power of gods's relics, but did you ever wonder how did the gods fall?
Doctor

Recall the story of Tower of Babel from 1031 to 1094, an organization founded by Lord of Fiends Theresa to reconcile the Sarkaz with the rest of the world. Yet the vengeful sentiment of Sarkaz clans and outside hostility force her and the organization exiled from Kazdel. In the meantime, an ancient landship called Rhodes Island was exhumed in Rim Bilton with a mysterious person on board, who could solve Oripathy once and for all. Yet unbeknownst to them, the incurable disease played an important role in the preservation of civilization from a certain doom, and Doctor must make the tough decision that will affect the organization of Babel, as well as the lives of those they loved.

Tropes featured in this episode

  • Book Ends: When Doctor Awaken from the stasis, they reached out for Theresa for her to fill them in on civilization development in Terra. By the end of the story, Theresa reached out for Doctor's hand to access their memory and proceed to erase them, while she is dying. There is also a pair of illustration to mark the significance of the scene.
  • Breather Episode: BB-4 cutscenes describe Doctor's adventure in Rim Biliton, and various encounters they had with Amiya and Savage. This is the only lighthearted episode of the entire story.
  • Call-Forward: Numerous
    • Theresa mentioned that how Kazdel mercenaries hired by Gaul comes to blow with Liches in Leithanien and Wendigos in Ursus, referring to Freimont's court and Patriot's military career, respectively.
    • The Lord of Banshee retorted Sanguinarch's mockery at their declining lineage by saying she will make sure that there is an elegy for him at the time of his death. In Episode 13, Logos fulfilled that wish for his mother.
    • Young Amiya and Doctor made a promise to protect each other with their life.
    • A Babel renegade remarked to Ace that a mercenary like him won't live too long on the battlefield.
    • Sanguinarch is surprise that even he still felt the grief at the moment of Theresa's death.
  • Curse Cut Short: Played for Laughs with Freimont the Lich. He essentially delivered a howler letter to Theresa on his opinion regarding The Military Commission of Kazdel. The Lich's envoy decided to mute Freimont's letter due to the amount of harsh languages used in that letter, leaving only his expression visible.
  • Deal with the Devil: Figuratively and Literately. The deal made between Doctor and Theresis can be seen as this from both side: Doctor made a deal with a Sarkaz, a humanoid devil. and Theresis made a deal with "The Demon of the Babel". Both got what they want at a horrible price(possibly a mutual one): Theresa's life.
  • Dramatic Ellipsis: Occurs before Doctor shut down the entire defense system on Rhode Island to let the assassins aboard. It took total of 18 Ellipses(and 18 clicks) before the story proceed.
  • Flower Motifs: Theresa showed Doctor the small batch of Snow-in-Summer(a.k.a. Cerastium tomentosum) she created from a small piece Originium. The motif of this flower represents purity and tenacity, similar to Theresa's kindness and her determination to fulfill her ideal. The secondary meaning of this flower is "To love someone they shouldn't love." implying the romantic interest between Doctor and herself, and reflecting the doomed relationship between them.
  • Interface Screw: The black and white background of Doctor's inner thought reflects their inner conflict. It is implied that the white background referred to the thought derived from Doctor's memory being altered. In addition, pre-amnesia Doctor conversation behavior is similar to that of other NPCs, yet Oracle is able to have dialogue buttons, just like the playable Doctor.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Scareye, the head of the mercenary black market, foresaw a vision that he will die in the hand of Ascalon. He proceed to stop the prophecy from coming true by any mean necessary. In the end, he managed to change how the fate played out, but not the outcome: He survived the wound from Ascalon, yet the ambush he place to kill her backfired, as they realized his death is an opportunity for a Klingon Promotion.
