One thing to note about Madoka is that even though she is the leader of the goddesses, and sometimes they call her their “boss” that’s not really the essence of it. Yes, Madoka is the most powerful goddess (by a wide enough margin that she’s nearly as strong as Athena and Satella combined) but that’s not why she’s in charge. She leads because she is the one with a vision for the future, the one who is first to fight, and first to help. Her hope and spirit bind the goddesses together. In the end, they work with one another because they’re friends, even if they have their little spats. As Aqua has told me, “I stay with the Seven because we’re buds! I know I screw up sometimes and I’m not all that smart, but Madoka always gives me hope that I can do better."
