Part I: It Was The Fourth Of July

Aliens.
Fucking aliens.
And not the friendly E.T. sort, but rather the conquer all and leave nothing but ashes and bones behind sort, circa Independence Day.
Somedays, Sharon Carter couldn’t believe this was the world she was living in. It wasn’t enough that an egocentric billionaire was flying around in a tin can and a giant, smashing green monster tore apart Harlem, and hints that whatever SHIELD had covered up in Puente Antiguo last year had something to do with actual gods from other worlds.
Nope.
Now aliens were a part of the equation.
Fan-fucking-tastic.

Sharon's first though after the "Battle of New York" ch.1

Sharon: Welcome to SHIELD, Captain, where no one truly ever trusts anyone else. Now, are you coming or what?

— Steve Rogers meets Agent 13 at the Triskelion, ch.8

Professor Jackson: Let's quit Stalin and move onto World War II.”

[He gave it a moment to let the joke sink in as Sharon snorted, Natasha humored him with a dry smirk and Rogers raised an eyebrow before murmuring].

Steve: I understood that reference. [Professor Jackson sighed and muttered to himself].

Professor Jackson: Boy, it’s going to be a long day.

Sharon: Excited to be back? [She asked, coming up to Rogers’ shoulder. He flinched and turned to her in surprise, his eyebrow quirked in confusion]

Steve: Excuse me? [He asked warily as if trying to discern her angle. Such a paranoid, that one].

Sharon: It’s been awhile since you were last in London, right? You came after your exploits in Azzano. You formed the Howling Commandos here.

Steve: How did you know that? [He questioned, his voice more suspicious than anything else].

Sharon: I saw it in a documentary. [She lied smoothly, not even blinking or stumbling at his inquiry].

Sharon: You know everything, don’t you? [She questioned, not even surprised that Peggy was keeping up with the news. On Peggy’s good days, she was as sharp as a tack].

Peggy: “It comes with the territory, dearest.”

Sharon: Yeah, yeah, rub it in. Alright, I should let you go. Try and get some sleep.

Peggy: I’m making no promises. Fly safely.

Sharon: Yeah, love you. Bye. [She hung up the phone and returned to her previous seat. Rogers was watching her curiously as she seated herself].

Sharon: My aunt [She said as she put away her cell phone]. She’s kind of an insomniac. [Rogers nodded and settled more into his seat as Sharon watched him].

Catherine: You don’t know that [ She mused thoughtfully as Sharon snorted, her mouth turning down bitterly].

Sharon: Trust me, I do. You don’t know him. The wholesome, All American act that we were fed in history class? All a lie. The guy’s a stubborn, obstinate asshole when he wants to be and he doesn’t abide by liars.

Sharon: What? And Neal and I won’t? [Catherine only shook her head as she reached out and patted Sharon’s shoulder comfortingly].

Catherine: Neal is not your forever love.

Sharon: Forever love? God, Catherine, he’s not a pet I’m taking home from an animal shelter. What is this? A Hallmark movie?

Catherine: You don’t love Neal [She insisted stubbornly as Sharon continued staring at her].

Sharon: We just started dating. I haven’t thought about it.

Catherine: Yeah, you haven’t thought about it. You also never even told me about it. I’m your best friend. If you loved him or had the capacity to love him, I would be the first to know.

Steve: Hi [ He finally got out as he rubbed the back of his neck, looking a twinge uncomfortable].

Sharon: Hi' [ She echoed back breathily, feeling a flush crawl across her cheeks. When had it gotten so hot in here? Someone needed to fix that. Wouldn’t want someone going down for the count due to overheating].

Steve: Well, uh...Happy New Year [ He murmured as Sharon bobbed her head, her curled hair slapping her cheeks ].

Sharon: You too! [ She said in a high pitched voice as the embarrassment grew].

Part II: You And I Were Fireworks

Sharon: So. You got a name for me? [Rogers just looked at her with a raised eyebrow, leaving her in suspense as she pressed her lips together ].

Come on [She goaded]. Don’t hold out on me. It’s a tradition. It’s our thing.

[ She gestured between the two of them. And it was true, for the last year and a half Rogers had thrown out random names at her as a way of guessing her true name. It was an inane game, but it was something they did. It was their thing. Every time he ventured a guess always left Sharon feeling warm on the inside, though she would rather go to the grave than admit that aloud to anyone].

[ Rogers looked away as he strapped his shield to his back, looking like he was thinking intently. As he lowered his arm he looked at her and pointed ].

Steve: Eunice.

The Lemurian Star.'

Her eyes widened as it suddenly made sense. The flash drive!

Yes, Fury had desired the flash drive enough to lie to Rogers. There was something important on the flash drive, something Fury wanted.

But why had Fury been at Rogers’ apartment last night? Why go there? Unless the shooting hadn’t been the Winter Soldier’s first attempt on the director’s life.

Sharon vividly remembered the bruising on Fury’s face in the hospital. He wouldn’t have gotten it from the shooting alone. The Winter Soldier must have tried to assassinate Fury earlier and had failed, tailing him to Rogers’ apartment.

So, whatever was on the flash drive was vital enough for someone to have Fury killed. Fury would have known this and would have left it with someone he trusted…someone like Rogers. He hadn’t passed it onto Hill in New York or to Secretary Pierce here in DC, which meant...he hadn’t trusted SHIELD. Sharon’s gut dropped at the thought of Fury not trusting SHIELD.

She remembered the way Rogers had lied to her only this morning about why Fury had been in his apartment. He must have given the flash drive to Rogers. Which meant Rogers had it.

Sharon shook her head. No, no he wouldn’t have it on his person anymore. Rogers was smart enough to know to be wary of SHIELD after Fury’s death. He wouldn’t have gone into the Triskelion with it on his person. Where would he have left it then? His apartment? Unlikely, the Dupont Circle apartment was a bonafide crime scene now, crawling with SHIELD agents.

Which only left...

The hospital.

— Deduction , ch. 3

Sharon: I’m coming with you.

Steve: Like hell you are. [Rogers scowled at her, which was oddly endearing seeing as how insanely silly he looked in the navy tracksuit].

Sharon: You can’t do this alone, Rogers. You have no idea what you’re up against. You need me.

Steve: 'You’re the last thing I need

— At the hospital , ch. 3

Sharon: Are we going to talk about it? [ She asked listlessly as Rogers busied himself with doing anything that didn’t involve looking at her ].

Steve: Talk about what? The fact you’ve been lying to me the entire time I’ve known you?

Sharon: For Peggy? [ Steve swallowed thickly before giving a single, steadfast nod ].

Rumlow: Oh, Thirteen. [ He shook his head, still laughing ]. You just love following Cap’s orders, don’t you? [ He turned to her fully, leering at her mockingly].

[All she wanted to do was punch that smarmy grin off of his motherfucking face until he was bleeding].

Sharon: Drop the gun, Rumlow.

Rumlow: I mean. Does he reward you? Or are you more into punishment?

Sharon: Listen. You piece of shit-..

Sharon: What do you want to know? [ The Avenger’s head lulled back as he pondered the question.].

Steve: Anything, everything. I’m not picky. The only thing I really know about you is that you attended Georgetown. [ Suddenly Steve’s expression was suspicious as he looked at her].

Sharon: I’ve been feeling a lot of emotions since losing my previous job. It bubbles up from time to time.

Sharon: He killed JFK? [She squeaked out disbelievingly ]. That’s not going to garner any public sympathy.

Isadore: They think he might have taken out Bobby as well.

[ Izzy unhelpfully supplied, looking like a kid at the candy store as he gleefully rubbed his hands together].

What a time to be alive. Every conspiracy theory is called into question now. What’s next, Area 51?

[ Sharon stared at Izzy with incredulous eyes].

Sharon: I really doubt the Winter Soldier had anything to do with Area 51, Iz.”

— BREAKING NEWS , ch. 14

Sharon: Wow. [ She sounded gob-smacked as she tried to work through that]. That’s…definitely something. [ Sam groaned in despair ].

Sam: And now I feel bad because…

Sharon: It’s like kicking a golden retriever who just wants love?

Sam: Exactly!

— In Prague , ch. 17

Steve: You can’t fight them off? [ Sharon chuckled as she shook his head ].

Sharon: I pick my battles, and ones against Mrs. Reyes are never worth it. If you do this, I will owe you for eternity.”

Steve: “Oh, yeah?” [ Steve asked with a waggle of his eyebrows]. And what do I get in return? [Sharon laughed as she pushed back his head].

Sharon: The luxury of knowing that you are every bit the gentleman America believes you to be.

Sharon: I had no choice! [ Sharon argued back, preoccupied with the stain. Luckily, her blotting had quashed the blood from spreading].

Catherine: Bullshit! You always have a choice!

Sharon: I don’t know what I’m doing anymore [She brokenly confessed, revealing the secrets that had been building in her heart for months. The same dark thoughts and doubts that kept her up at night].

Barnes: Why do you have a picture of his butt?” [ Sharon shrugged casually as she sipped her espresso].

[Steve - with a glass of champagne raised and angled towards his mouth – paused and then lowered the drink, face mulish as he did so. It didn’t take a genius to see where that joke came from. He wasn’t completely oblivious. Well, only some of the time].

Steve: Well, you’ll always be my favorite redhead.

Sharon: Everything, Kit-Kat! [Sharon cried out as she pathetically burrowed into the security of her best friend’s side]. My head’s a mess. First, the fantasies started and I just thought it’d be a way for me to get off.
