Basic Trope: A father intimidates his daughter's boyfriend into showing restraint with her.

  • Straight: Bob sits down his daughter Alice's boyfriend Dean and goes over his combat experience, his gun collection, impressing upon Dean what would happen if he were to upset Alice.
  • Exaggerated: Bob holds Dean in a Torture Cellar, shining the light in his face as he does, and tells Dean in a deep, raspy, and harsh tone about what would happen to him if he upset Alice.
  • Downplayed: Bob doesn't threaten Dean, but firmly tells him to treat her well.
  • Justified: One of Alice's past boyfriends sexually humiliated and/or abused her, and Bob is making sure Dean doesn't do the same thing.
  • Inverted:
    • Alice interrogates her father's date Carol, warning her that if she upsets her father she'll have hell to pay.
    • Bob is so taken with Dean that he intimidates a bewildered Alice to make sure she doesn't hurt him.
    • Dean tells Alice he will seek Bob's blessing for the date, by which we mean Dean intimidates Bob.
  • Subverted:
  • Double Subverted: ...but then warns Dean that he knows people who know how to make him disappear if he upsets her.
  • Parodied: Bob smoothly switches between Bumbling Dad and Batman copy-cat as soon as Alice turns her head.
  • Zig-Zagged: Bob was speaking about Alice's more psychotic friends, not people he would (need to) call upon… forewarned is forearmed after all.
  • Averted: Bob doesn't try to intimidate Dean.
  • Enforced: "We want to show Bob's devotion to his daughter. He should warn her boyfriends not to try anything."
  • Lampshaded: "Go easy on Dean, okay Daddy?"
  • Invoked: Alice leaves Dean alone with Bob for this to happen.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied:
    • Bob doesn't intimidate Dean, because his wife told him he should give their daughter's boyfriends a chance before intimidating them.
    • Dean is completely impossible to intimidate and he puts a little pressure on Bob to lighten up as well.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed:
    • Bob's constant intimidation of Alice's boyfriends make all boys avoid her, leaving her unable to date at all.
    • Dean feels antagonized by Bob, and breaks up with Alice just to spite him.
    • Bob's intimidation of Dean creates an antagonistic atmosphere between them, resulting in Alice and Dean's relationship becoming tense due to Dean feeling intimidated and antagonized by Bob when he hasn't done anything yet.
    • Dean's own father hears about the intimidation and goes to confront Bob himself as payback. Things get out of hand.
