Basic Trope: A puzzle involving toggling a button or lever multiple times to progress.

  • Straight: In Drake's Hideout, there's switches on the wall that you can set to Red or Blue. When it's at Red, red-colored doors will open, while setting it to Blue closes the red doors and opens the blue ones. You'll have to toggle between which doors are open to explore everything in the dungeon and make progress.
  • Exaggerated: There are not only red and blue doors, but purple, green, yellow, and white. Each switch can only open one door at a time.
  • Downplayed: An optional bonus puzzle has you toggling a pair of blocks on and off so a Helpful Mook can pass.
  • Justified:
    • Drake is a Gadgeteer Genius who's adept at creating complicated contraptions such as this.
    • The red/blue doors are respectively the inner/outer airlock doors, the red/blue switch pressurizes/depressurizes the airlock.
  • Subverted: After you turn the switch to Red, it doesn't close the blue doors, effectively opening everything.
  • Double Subverted: But then you run into a switch for green and yellow doors, which operate properly.
  • Parodied: It turns out that Drake is colorblind, and all the doors actually end up being the same color — you just need to flip the switch to open all of them.
  • Zig-Zagged: The red/blue doors can only be toggled at set points, while the yellow/green pairs can be toggled anywhere. Additionally, if you have a high enough Strength stat, you can just punch through some of the doors... but you'll lose some health and MP.
  • Averted: There isn't a puzzle that revolves around toggling a single item.
  • Lampshaded: "When we set the switch to Red, the red doors open and the blue ones close. When we set it to Blue, the blue doors open and the red ones close!"
  • Invoked: Drake puts such a puzzle in his hideout to confuse the heroes.
  • Defied: The heroes, rather than flipping the switches, get Mission Control to remotely open the doors.
  • Discussed: "Look at those color-coded doors! Think they have any relation to that switch on the wall?"
  • Conversed: "Game designers really like puzzles that let you switch stuff on and off, huh?"
