Basic Trope: Characters who aren't related in the source material are related to each other in an adaptation.

  • Straight: The book The Adventures of Alice and Bob features two Kid Heroes, Alice and Bob, who are best friends. In Alice and Bob: The Movie, Alice and Bob are siblings.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Everyone Is Related in the movie, but no characters were in the original book.
    • Alice and Bob are related to each other in the adaptation when they didn't even meet in the source material.
  • Downplayed:
    • Related Differently in the Adaptation: For instance, Alice and Bob are cousins in the book, but siblings in the movie.
    • Alice and Bob are made adopted siblings or stepsiblings when they were just friends in the original book.
    • Alice and Bob were adopted relatives in the original, but are made blood relatives in the adaptation.
  • Justified: A plot point in the movie is Alice and Bob discovering that they actually are related to each other.
  • Inverted: Unrelated in the Adaptation
  • Subverted: ???
  • Double Subverted: ???
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Alice and Bob are friends with no indication that they're related in both the book and the movie.
  • Enforced:
    • Alice and Bob being related to each other makes more sense than them just being friends, whether it's to cut down on exposition or just because they have a lot of similarities.
    • The actors playing Alice and Bob are siblings, so it's made an Actor-Inspired Element.
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: Alice and Bob's parents end up getting married to each other, making them stepsiblings.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "In the original book, Alice and Bob were just friends, but I think it makes a lot more sense for them to be siblings in the movie."
  • Implied: Alice and Bob are Ambiguously Related in the movie.
