Basic Trope: A character can only say one word.

  • Straight: Bob only says, "Hello!"
  • Exaggerated:
    • All of the characters can only say one word.
    • Even when Bob is asked to give a speech for 3 minutes, he only says "Hello!" then bows and gets off the stage.
  • Downplayed:
  • Justified:
    • Bob is a robot.
    • Bob is still a child with very limited vocabulary.
    • The Quiet One.
  • Inverted: Everyone else says one word, except for Bob.
  • Subverted: Bob says another word for once...
  • Double Subverted: ...but it was actually someone who looked like Bob.
  • Zig Zagged: (triple subversion) ...Or was it?
  • Parodied: Bob only says, "Antidisestablishmentarianism."
  • Averted: Bob says many other words like a normal person.
  • Enforced: The actor for Bob has severe memory issues and can only remember his lines if they consist of only one word.
  • Lampshaded: "For god's sake, Bob! Can you say something else for once?"
  • Invoked: Bob wants to come off as mysterious or wise because he firmly believes that the less said the better.
  • Exploited: Bob uses the word "Antidisestablishmentarianism" as a Catchphrase to have people recognize him by it.
  • Defied: Bob learns more words.
  • Discussed: "Can't that guy say anything else?"
  • Conversed: "Why do these shows have at least one character that can only say one word?"
  • Deconstructed: Bob's inability to say other words bores people and even makes them view him as a weirdo, and thus, they avoid talking to him.
  • Reconstructed: People around Bob get used to his lack of variety in vocabulary and think it makes him unique.
  • Played For Laughs: The only word Bob says is "dick."
  • Played For Drama: Bob can only say "goodbye" the last word his mom said before she abandoned him at a candy store. The trauma of his mom abandoning him almost renders him Dumb Struck save for the word "goodbye" being the only one he's able to say.
