Basic Trope: A character doesn't realize another character hates them.
- Straight: Alice hates Bob, but he thinks they're friends.
- Exaggerated: Alice routinely tries to kill Bob, but he thinks they're best friends.
- Downplayed:
- Alice mildly dislikes Bob, who believes they have a cordial relationship.
- Alice hates Bob, who thinks Alice merely dislikes him.
- Justified:
- Bob is generally the oblivious type.
- While Alice hates Bob, she doesn't do much to actually show it, so he's unaware of her feelings.
- Inverted: Oblivious to Love
- Subverted: Bob speaks to Alice as though they're friends. When she responds with shock, he replies that he knows she hates him.
- Double Subverted: He then says he's joking.
- Parodied: Alice shoots Bob in the head. As he lays dying his last words are "aww, I know you're kidding, you big joker".
- Zig-Zagged: Alice has multiple personalities, but only one hates Bob. It is very hard to tell which one is active at any given time, so Bob assumes that Alice loves him by default.
- Averted:
- Alice doesn't hate Bob.
- Bob is aware Alice hates him.
- Enforced: The writers want to:
- Potray Alice as an Alpha Bitch and Bob as an idiot.
- Potray Bob as a depraved stalker who never takes no as an answer.
- Lampshaded: Alice asks, "You know I hate you, right?" Bob laughs and responds, "Oh, you big kidder you!"
- Invoked: Alice uses a charm that makes everyone like her. This enables her to abuse Bob without losing any of his loyalty.
- Exploited:
- Charles enlists Alice to harm Bob, knowing that between his oblivious nature and her not showing her feelings very often, it will go off without a hitch.
- Alice forces Bob to do chores around the house, since she knows he thinks they're friends.
- Defied: Alice sits Bob down and plainly explains, in no uncertain terms, that she hates his guts.
- Discussed: "It's weird how Bob still loves me after all that I've said and done to him. Hopefully he finally stops soon and goes away."
- Conversed: "I know that you aren't as interested in Bob as he is in you, but you don't have to be an asshole about it towards him."
- Deconstructed: Alice is endlessly frustrated by the fact that, no matter what she does or how often she spells it out for him that she hates his guts, Bob just won't stop treating her as if they're the best of friends. Eventually she snaps and goes insane.
