Playing With / Mangled Catchphrase

Go To

Basic Trope: An impostor can't get the one they're posing as' Catchphrase right.

  • Straight: When greeting people, Alice usually says "Hiyeee!" in a very enthusiastic voice, but when Betty is pretending to be Alice for whatever reason, she either says "HIIYEEAAH!", "Hiya", "Hiyo", or just plain "Hi".
  • Exaggerated: What Betty says doesn't even sound remotely like Alice's catchphrase.
  • Downplayed: Betty can say "Hiyeee!" but it sounds less enthusiastic than when Alice says it.
  • Justified: Betty can't remember Alice's catchphrase very well, she can't be bothered, or she needs to practice saying it.
  • Inverted: Betty can never get her supposed catchphrase to sound how she wants it too, and Betty's perfect "Hiyeee!" proves that she is an overprepared imposter.
  • Subverted: Betty disguised as Alice says "Hiyo" and Bob, Carol and Charlie say "Why are you saying that? You normally never say that!", to which Betty responds with the normal catchphrase.
  • Double Subverted: But when Dave comes along, she says "Hiya".
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig Zagged: Sometimes Betty says "Hiyeee!" just like Alice but sometimes she gets it wrong and says "Hiya" or "Hiyo" and sometimes she can't be bothered and says just plain "Hi".
  • Averted: No character pretends to be another, no character has a catchphrase, or Betty gets Alice's catchphrase right.
  • Enforced: The writers know that Betty is good at disguises, and if she pretends to be Alice she has to be found out somehow, so they came up with this.
  • Lampshaded:
    • "Alice doesn't say "Hiyo", Alice says "Hiyeee", what is going on with her?"
    • "Why did Alice say "Hiya" instead of "Hiyeee"? Could she be an impostor? That does happen with impostors in my books."
  • Invoked: Someone needs to disguise themselves as someone with a catchphrase that is hard to remember.
  • Exploited: Bob uses Betty's not getting Alice's catchphrase right to find out that she is not the real Alice.
  • Defied: Betty practices Alice's catchphrase ahead of time.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "That impostor doesn't stand a chance, she could never get Alice's catchphrase right."
  • Played for Laughs: Whenever Betty says "Hiya", "Hiyo", "HIIYEEAAH!", or "Hi", the other characters either don't notice and are holding the Idiot Ball, or they notice something is weird and crack a joke about it.
  • Played for Drama: The Big Bad Emperor Evulz has a catchphrase that is hard to remember, and Bob is disguised as him, so hopes he doesn't have to say it.
  • Implied: "Alice" acts somewhat out-of-character and is unable to say "Hiyeee!" for a little while. It seems like it might not really be her, but it's not resolved.

Here's the line to Mangled Catch Phrase, but remember that TV Tropes will ruin your wife.
