Basic Trope: Two characters of different species make friends.
- Straight: Alice the dog and Bob the raccoon are best friends.
- Exaggerated:
- Alice the dog makes friends with Bob the amoeba.
- An angel and a demon somehow end up making friends.
- Not a single one of Alice's friends is another dog.
- Downplayed:
- Alice and Bob are just nodding acquaintances.
- Alice is a dog and Bob is a wolf.
- Justified:
- Sometimes, dogs do get along with raccoons.
- Alice and Catherine have know each other since puppy-/kittenhood respectively (and thus learned their respective idiosyncrasies at a young enough age)
- Inverted: Alice the dog and Bob the raccoon are mortal enemies.
- Subverted: Alice and Bob are sleeping next to each other, but when they wake up, they start fighting.
- Double Subverted: They were just play-fighting.
- Parodied: Among animal society, "species-ism" is a common prejudice similar to racism and sexism, so Alice and Bob face persecution that parodies real life persecution.
- Zigzagged: Alice is a dog and Bob is a raccoon and they sometimes get along and sometimes don't.
- Averted: Alice and Bob are both dogs or both raccoons.
- Enforced:
- Lampshaded: "Your best friend is a what?!"
- Invoked: Bob tries to be as polite as possible to Alice and vice versa.
- Exploited: Bob can climb, so Alice asks him to climb places and get things down for her.
- Defied: The Civilised Animal leader makes a rule not to associate with a different species.
- Discussed: "Can dogs and raccoons get along?"
- Conversed: "My kid's watching The Dog and Her Buddy the Raccoon on TV."
- Implied: Alice and Bob are always seen next to each other.
- Deconstructed: Alice gets rabies from Bob.
- Reconstructed: Bob gets vaccinated.
- Played for Laughs:
- Played for Drama: Charles, Alice's owner, tries to keep Bob away from her.
