Basic Trope: A character is revealed to be wearing false teeth.

  • Straight: Tom trips and his dentures fall out.
  • Exaggerated: Every character in the setting has false teeth that they are unable to keep from falling out of their mouths.
  • Downplayed: Tom only has one false tooth.
  • Justified:
    • Tom never took proper care of his teeth, so he has to wear dentures to hide the fact that he only has toothless gums.
    • Tom has to wear dentures because of an accident that knocked all his teeth out.
  • Inverted: Children never lose baby teeth.
  • Subverted: A set of dentures falls out of Tom's mouth, but he turns out to still have his teeth and was pranking people with a novelty.
  • Double Subverted: After the prank, Tom reveals that his actual teeth are fake as well.
  • Parodied: Tom wakes up one morning to find that his dentures were taken by the Tooth Fairy.
  • Zig Zagged: Tom has trouble keeping his dentures in his mouth, but sometimes he remembers to use Poligrip to glue his false teeth in place.
  • Averted: No one is shown to have false teeth.
  • Enforced: "When we're using elderly characters in a comedy, our audience will expect us to do jokes about old people losing their false teeth."
  • Lampshaded: "At least you don't have to worry about going to the dentist, Tom."
  • Invoked: Tom gets his teeth knocked out and decides to get a set of dentures to replace them.
  • Exploited: Tom uses the fact that his teeth aren't real to pull one over a Depraved Dentist.
  • Defied: Tom brushes and flosses as much as he can and regularly visits the dentist to ensure that his teeth never have to be replaced by dentures.
  • Discussed: "It's weird how every elderly person we meet wears false teeth."
  • Conversed: "Why do elderly characters always wear dentures? Do the writers think you forget how to take proper care of your teeth when you age?"
  • Implied: Tom never takes his dentures out, but states that his teeth are not real.
  • Deconstructed: After Tom's dentures slip out, he loses them and is unable to eat solid food.
  • Reconstructed: Tom remembers to have a spare set of dentures on hand in case he loses the set already in his mouth.
