Go To

Basic Trope: A seer has a strong negative reaction to a prediction of the future.

  • Straight: Alice has the ability to see visions of the future. One vision she has is so shocking that she freaks out and ultimately faints.
  • Exaggerated: Alice's vision is so shocking that she screams, rambles nonsense, and spasms, before dramatically falling to the floor, twitching.
  • Downplayed: Alice is shocked by her vision, gasps, and momentarily loses her balance.
  • Justified: Alice literally saw the end of the world.
  • Inverted:
    • Alice is already freaking out over something else, when she has a vision of the future that's so serious it knocks her back to her senses.
    • One of Alice's visions is so shocking that she lets out a Big "YES!" out of exhilaration, jumping up and down like a rabbit.
  • Subverted: Alice passes out after having a vision of the future, but it turns out her vision of the future is pretty mundane and she passed out for unrelated reasons.
  • Double Subverted: Then, after waking up, she remembers her vision, and passes out a second time from the shock.
  • Parodied:
    • After fainting, Alice is taken to a special wing at a local hospital for seers who saw something they probably shouldn't have.
    • Bob is going to visit various fortune tellers asking them to check something in the future for him. As he leaves each one, they're slouched over on their chair unconscious.
  • Zig-Zagged:
  • Averted:
    • Alice doesn't have a vision of the future.
    • Alice has a calm reaction to her vision.
  • Enforced: Alice faints because she needs to be out of the picture for a while - her being able to tell her vision to the other characters would resolve the plot too easily.
  • Lampshaded: "Wow! That must have been some vision..."
  • Invoked: Bob tricks Alice into using her seer abilities to see the end of the world, expecting this to happen.
  • Exploited: Bob is a villain - he tricked Alice believing her reaction will keep her out of commission for a while, preventing her from helping the heroes.
  • Defied: Alice drinks tea before viewing the future, to keep her calm and awake in case she has a particularly shocking vision.
  • Discussed: "If Alice looks at your future, she'll freak out!"
  • Conversed:
  • Implied: Bob enters Alice's room to ask her to see a vision of the future for him. A doctor enters a while later, and wheels out Alice's unconscious body on a gurney.
  • Deconstructed: Alice has seen and reacted to many dramatic and disturbing visions of the future, and it's starting to take a more permanent physical and psychological toll on her.
  • Played for Drama: Alice legitimately has a heart attack from the shock of her vision, and has to go to intensive care.
