Basic Trope Description: The family of a deceased person is visited by people from their respective institution and informed about the person's death by them.

  • Straight: Bob goes off to war. Later, he dies in combat, and Charlie and Dan, who are both military staff, go to Bob's family's house and tell his parents and his wife Alice.
  • Exaggerated: Bob dies in combat. His family is visited by the whole leftover army only to inform him about Bob's death.
  • Downplayed: Bob dies in combat. His family is informed about his death with a letter.
  • Justified: It is standard procedure in the setting's army.
  • Inverted:
    • Bob has been born after a Surprise Pregnancy to a soldier in the army, and Charlie and Dan go and inform the parents of his mother Alice about the birth.
    • When Bob dies, Charlie and Dan leave the house of his family.
  • Subverted: Charlie and Dan go to Bob's family's house to inform his parents and his wife about Bob's death. But in the midst of the way, they are Distracted by the Sexy by some prostitutes and forget about their duty.
  • Double Subverted: When they meet Bob's wife Alice on the street this night, they know again what they had to do, and come home to her to tell her.
  • Enforced: Rule of Drama
  • Averted: Soldiers die, but it is never shown what happens at home.
  • Zigzagged: Bob dies, and Dan and Charlie go on a literal odyssee to bring Alice and Bob's parents the news. You never know whether they will arrive in the end.
  • Parodied: Bob goes "around the corner for cigarettes", and the next day, Charlie and Dan crop up at the family's door with the notification.
  • Lampshaded: "And...there they come. I know that this would happen! Oh God, why me?"
  • Discussed: "Why do they send you two soldiers when someone dies in war, Momma?" "This is more respectful than just something like a letter." "Respect. Respect is good."
  • Conversed: "It is so clear that Bob has died. Why still wasting the energy?"
