Basic Trope Description: People in the future believe mundane things or pop culture icons to have been deities in our age.

  • Straight: In our present, Tropey the Dog was a popular children's cartoon dog. When pictures of him are excavated one thousand years after WWIII, the archaeologists believe that people in our age worshiped Tropey as an animal god.
  • Exaggerated: In our present, Tropey the Dog was just one dog named Tropey on a child's drawing nobody besides the kid's mum ever saw. When archaeologists excavate the drawing two thousand years after WWIII, they believe that Tropey has been a all-powerful god of the universe for us.
  • Downplayed: In our present, Tropey the Dog was a popular children's cartoon dog. When pictures of him are excavated one hundred years after WWIII, the archaeologists believe that Tropey was a real dog who could do some magic.
  • Justified:
    • The archaeologists' understanding of art is different, and in their age, cartoonish art is typical for sacred art.
    • The knowledge of archaeology has been lost in WWIII.
    • The world has changed sufficiently that pseudo-archaeologists are listened to more then actual archaeologists.
  • Inverted: Archaeologists find a figurine of Tronna the Alien, a pop culture icon of the future that a time traveler left behind in our present. They believe Tronna to be a picture of a future goddess.
  • Subverted: In our present, Tropey the Dog was a popular children's cartoon dog. When pictures of him are excavated one thousand years after WWIII, the archaeologists believe that people in our age worshiped Tropey as an animal god...but there was really a Church of Tropey in our age.
  • Double Subverted: The Church of Tropey never grew bigger than its founder, who was just an insane, overzealous fan of Tropey the Dog.
  • Averted: The archaeologists in the future sort everything they find right into sacred and mundane.
  • Enforced: The authors want to explain how easily something can turn holy for us.
  • Zigzagged:
  • Parodied: The archaeologists dig up a perfectly ordinary home. They become convinced that they have uncovered an ancient site of worship, declaring the counters to be altars, the paintings to depict gods and so on right down to becoming convinced that the tiles and wooden planks in the flooring were designed in geometric patterns as a maze to trap demons. They then proceed to found a religion based off this.
  • Lampshaded: "Tropey the Dog, god of animals...they had really strange customs back in the 21st century."
  • Discussed: "Worshiping a dog? That was a really backwards age!" "Yes, shows how they could be so dumb and eradicate most of civilization."
  • Conversed: "When they find pictures of Tropey in a thousand years, they will maybe think we worshiped him. And we just regularly watched him!"
  • Played For Laughs:

And all hail the main page, like they said centuries ago...
