• The first scene is a bunch of prisoners left out to be vaporized by the sun. Bad? Yes. Worse? This is how they get their power sources. Nomad looks on his drained sunheart with new eyes upon realizing that.
  Nomad opened his eyes and fished in his pocket, bringing out the drained sunheart that had been left after he'd ingested the Investiture. It felt like glass in his fingers—a small cylindrical lump of smokestone eight inches tall and a few in diameter. The surface was marked with ridges and a kind of grain, like melted wax. It was random, of course, but he could swear that one section looked like a screaming face...
• The Chorus are the trapped shades of the dead, because of course Threnodites still leave shades. They're a mix of those taken from their old homeworld and everyone who has died since, whispering their history, sometimes answering questions, and sometimes... hungering.
  "But others," another said, pressing against the glass, "must be given to the sun. This is the sun's land."
  "Do this not," the first said, "and shades will overrun the world. Such a small planet. They will take everything. They would rip and destroy you."
  "As we would," another added, "if allowed. To taste the flesh of the living. To drink their heat."
