The Lords of the Lance novel by Graham McNeill is the first book set in the old world of Warhammer fantasy, around three hundred years before the end times. The son of Baron Lothar Aquilena of the Border Princes has been taken hostage. Despite their bitter relationship, the Baron has called the debt of honour owed to him by Duke Carrard of Quenelles, and their uneasy alliance of warrior knights is forced to mount a treacherous expedition into the Land of the Dead, where kings and queens of old rest uneasy in their tombs, and life struggles to find purchase.

- Jousting Lance: As knights of Bretonnia, their main weapon is a jousting lanced used in the charge on horseback. Considering the faction, its results are deadly.
- Knight in Shining Armor: Par for the course of Bretonnia, many of the characters aspire to be this. The prime example however is the grail knight Sir Leodegar joining them, who is one.
- Sliding Scale of Gender Inequality: In comparison to their other portrayals, women are allowed to be knights with comparatively little issue. Few characters speak of facing pushback for their taking of the knight's vow, but few men in story seem to care that women are fighting alongside them.
