Heartwarming / Warhammer 40,000: Darktide

Yes, believe it or not, there are one or two of these. Even in a setting as bleak as Warhammer 40K, there are little moments of party banter that hint at this.

  • The Professional and the Brawler have friendly banter, as they come from similar military backgrounds. The Brawler will gleefully follow the orders of the Professional, and the Pro will always come to the defense of Ogryn if the other party members are dismissive of them. When a Brawler is downed the Pro will call out in dismay, and offer condolences and reassurances during rescue. There is also an extended dialogue where they express their satisfaction in working together, and the Brawler offers to share his rations with his small friend.
    • Professionals can, like Fanatic Preachers, also be a little more open-minded than most; they're fine with trading with peaceful xenos and other nonhumans so long as care is taken to avoid picking up language and customs, which is a degree of tolerance that would be considered downright heretical by Agitator Preachers and the like. They can also comment that it'd be pretty sad if abhumans didn't have souls, given how faithful and devoted to the Emperor some of them can be - especially Ogryn.
  • The Cut Throat Veteran of all people do have moments like this.
    • They genuinely respect and sympathize with Zola's plight to save her homeworld, given what happened to Cadia.
    • They also firmly believe that Abhumans have souls. Or rather, they never doubted that they had souls in the first place, contrary to what the Imperial faith might be preaching.
    • A Cut Throat reviving another can have them encouraging the other to keep fighting and the pain will pass. While they do not respond when their ally ask if the pain will pass because they will survive to fight another day, they also don't coldly shoot it down like they do to similar such sentiments on a regular basis either.
    • Their relationship with the Savant Psyker is oddly wholesome in its own way.
      • Due to their similar devotions to their duty and discipline, they tend to reach common ground with each other more often than most, with them frequently comparing philosophies in party dialogue, and disagreements are usually respectful instead of being met with threats of violence.
      • The two of them seem to constantly be looking out for each other in combat, with the Cut Throat offering to teach the Savant how to more properly use their weapons, and the Psyker encouraging the embittered Veteran to not lose hope. When talking to a Savant who's struggling to quell their Peril, the Cut Throat actually sound considerate of their wellbeing, and indirectly imply that they need to look out for each other more instead of praying to some nebulous deity, as the Emperor's grace can be fickle.
      • As the cherry on top, one possible talking point can have the Cut Throat asking the Savant to give them a Mercy Kill when it's their time to kick the bucket, with the latter initially doubting their intent before being assured by the former that they only made the offer because they trusted them. Given how bitter and cynical a Cut Throat normally is, it says a lot of how highly they regard the Savant compared to literally everyone else.
  • Psykers of all types will refer to one another as siblings, and commiserate with their shared troubles with the warp. Savant Psykers tend to be the most kind and optimistic with a genuine belief in Justice and Truth - although given the others are either traumatized Loners or screw-loose Seers, it's a bit of a low bar.
  • The Fanatic is well, a fanatic. But there is a genuine glee to his/her grisly work and they extend their love of the Emperor to their teammates. They seem to think battling heretics is a fun afternoon activity with their friends, and are nothing but polite and inspiring to their comrades, referring to them as 'kindred'.
    • Additionally they are genuine in their belief of the Emperor's love, going as far as to claim that even if they believe that abhumans might not be born with souls, that the Emperor is more than capable of granting ones to them. The Judge is also more tolerant and uplifting at times, genuinely believing in the Imperial Cult as a way to improve Humanity's lot rather than necessarily using it to oppress, murder, and abuse.
    • The Judge will sometimes outright comment that he considers the other rejects, including the Ogryn, family.
  • The camaraderie between Ogryns is a rare sight of wholesomeness in the grim darkness of the setting. Whereas the other classes bicker and snark at each other constantly, Orgyns for the most part treat one another like best buddies, affectionately referring to each other as "pals" and revel in their bloody rampages with absolute glee like a bunch of oversized toddlers as they rip the heretics a new one. Even the brutish Bully tends to be more chummy towards his fellow Ogryns than he does other classes.
    • The Bodyguard Ogryn usually lives up to his moniker by being very protective of his teammates regardless of their background. In a mixed group, a Bodyguard may even comment on how he has come to view his allies as some sort of family. A messy, rowdy, and probably insane bunch who use big words that make his head spin, but family nonetheless.
  • The Professional's dialogue during the start of the tutorial level. Despite having been branded a criminal/traitor/heretic and on their way to likely execution (for no good reason), the first thing they say as they pick up a discarded weapon: "Convict or not, I still have a duty to the Imperium.". And go right back to killing the actual heretics as if they were still in the Imperial Guard.
