  • Davy Crockett's talk with Travis about fighting against Santa Anna in order to make Texas a free republic.
Crockett: Republic. I like the sound of the word. It means people can live free, talk free, go or come, buy or sell, be drunk or sober, however they choose. Some words give you a feeling. 'Republic' is one of those words that makes me tight in the throat — the same tightness a man gets when his baby takes his first step or his first baby shaves and makes his first sound as a man. Some words can give you a feeling that makes your heart warm. 'Republic' is one of those words.
  • John Wayne's Davy Crockett and Flaca have several heartwarming scenes.
  • Crockett sending Smitty out with a message, knowing he won't make it back to the Alamo in time. All so that the boy won't die along with the rest of the defenders.
  • Watching Crockett and Bowie, and all of their men decide against leaving the mission when Travis tells them that no reinforcements are coming, and no one would think less of them for leaving.
