Despite his pessimism, Uramichi truly does care about the kids and offers genuinely helpful advice to them.
The kids generally give back as much as they get from Uramichi. When one of them notices that he looks and sounds upset, she performs a "magic spell" on him so he can feel better. He's genuinely touched.
One time, he's set to perform in a live show. When one of the kids expresses interest in going to watch him, Uramichi is so happy he gives a rare real smile to them, which throws off all the adults.

At their mall appearance, one little boy gives Uramichi a cheerful thank you because “he got to spend the whole day with his dad because of you!” It’s such a wholesome moment that Uramichi is momentarily overcome.

In a flashback, Kumatani sees his old boss abusing a small cat and without putting much thought into it, he punches him in the face, rescues the cat, and quits his job on the spot.
